  Southern University's library is home to a rare portrait of Frederick Douglass and his daughter

  Southern University and A & M College

  A portrait of Frederick Douglass and his youngest child, Annie, hangs in the John B. Cade Library at Southern University. The library is the only place where this print can be found. Douglass never smiled in his photographs, yet he smiles in this one. Featured Dr. Dawn Kight, Dean of Libraries, Mr. Eddie Hughes, Head of Special Collections, and Ms. Angela Proctor, Head Archivist and Digital Librarian.

  Change The Pattern

  Southern University and A&M College

  The AIDS Memorial Quilt Feb. 7 -11, the National AIDS Memorial, Southern AIDS Coalition (SAC), and Gilead Sciences will showcase two major displays of the AIDS Quilt at two HBCU campuses -- Dillard University in New Orleans and Southern University & A&M College in Baton Rouge. The five-day AIDS Quilt displays, taking place during Black History Month, are free to the public and include quilting workshops, educational forums, and student events.

  About Change the Pattern

  In the fight to end HIV and AIDS in the Southern U.S., the National AIDS Memorial has partnered with Southern AIDS Coalition to bring sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt honoring Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ lives lost to HIV and AIDS to communities throughout the region to raise awareness about the HIV crisis that persists today within communities of color and marginalized populations. Funded through a $2.4 million grant from Gilead Sciences, Change the Pattern is focused primarily on reaching communities disproportionately impacted by HIV and AIDS through free Quilt displays, quilt-making workshops, educational programming, and advocacy.

  Southern University commemorates Founders' Day, and it's 143rd anniversary during the week of March 6, 2023. Dr. Dawn Kight, Dean of Libraries, and Ms. Angela Proctor, Head Archivist and Digital Librarian, are interviewed by Cali Hubbard, WAFB.

  Cade Library's Black History month programming celebrates the contributions that African American have made to American history. Dr. Alvin Schexnider, a leader in higher education and executive management, shared his genealogical search, and lessons about family, HBCUs, and the American dream.
